JANINE
Janine is a fiercely talented songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Her sound can be described as indie R&B, with elements of soul, pop and intricate soundscapes designed to make you feel something.
She is also a self-sufficient artist who has created her own artwork and directed music videos. But, her greatest weapon: an ethereal and devastatingly beautiful voice that commands every single verse, hook and refrain. She’s magnetic and honest - bringing you into her world.
Born in New Zealand, Janine dedicated herself to music almost as soon as she could walk, recording herself singing her favorite tunes on a double cassette player at the age of five. At the age of fourteen, she began performing her original songs with a guitar at open mics, mostly held at bars she wasn’t technically allowed into.
Under original moniker Janine and The Mixtape, the artist made quite a mark since first arriving stateside in 2011. She moved to New York quietly building a buzz, the songstress penned, produced, and recorded 2013’s independent Dark Mind EP. Following placements on VH1’s Black Ink Crew and Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta, it vaulted to #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and #2 on iTunes Top R&B/Soul Albums Chart, while the single “Hold Me” went Top 10 on Spotify’s Global Viral Charts and #1 on iTunes New Zealand.
Tastemakers including Complex, VIBE, Billboard, MTV, and more lauded her sound. Signing to Atlantic Records, she released her 2015’s XX EP and went on a nationwide tour of the US opening for the reunion of the world-renowned duo, Floetry.
Her project “XXEP” went on to win “Best R&B Album” at the New Zealand Music Awards. She saw further success from her first headline tour across the US, “Before It’s Too Late,” and the release of her debut album “99,” which has been described as “Aaliyah crooning over nocturnal Bryson Tiller production or a femme fatale Weekend.”
In 2019 Janine and Atlantic Records parted ways leading her back to her roots as an independent, DIY artist and growing her own record label “Little Mixtape Records”. Since going independent again she has multiplied her following and social engagement.
Janine has been busy writing, producing, creating artwork, directing music videos and releasing singles every year since 2019, including her latest single release ‘If I Call’ released in 2023.
