CONCORD DAWN

Concord Dawn began in Auckland in 1999, with Evan Short and Matt Harvey quickly establishing themselves as one of New Zealand’s leading drum and bass acts. Their unique, high-octane sound took them from the local bNet and student radio scene to international recognition, with releases on some of the genre’s most respected labels and extensive touring throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and beyond.

Across a career spanning more than two decades, Concord Dawn released a series of influential albums and EPs, including Uprising, Chaos By Design, The Enemy Within and Air Chrysalis. Their music has appeared on labels including Metalheadz, RAM Records, Hospital, Critical, Exit, Blackout, Eatbrain, Commercial Suicide and Function, while the project has earned multiple New Zealand Music Awards and international acclaim.
The project’s Uprising Records imprint, founded in 2004, also helped provide an early platform for artists including Pendulum, The Upbeats, Camo & Krooked and State of Mind.

After Evan left the project in 2008, Matt continued Concord Dawn as a solo artist. His fifth studio album, The Enemy Within, was released in 2010, reaching number two on the New Zealand iTunes album chart and winning iTunes New Zealand’s Electronic Album of the Year. The following year, The Race To Zero EP marked a new direction, earning a 9.5/10 review from DJ Magazine and Release of the Month, alongside support from BBC Radio.
Further releases followed, including the Wipeout EP with Trei in 2012 and the full-length Air Chrysalis, which was released independently as a free download for fans. Featuring vocalists including Savage, Nina McSweeney & Rikki Morris, Air Chrysalis was recognised with Best Electronic Album at the 2012 New Zealand Music Awards.

Matt continued to develop the Concord Dawn sound through releases including the Numbers Will Kill Us All EP in 2013, as well as music and collaborations on labels including Eatbrain, Horizons, Blu Mar Ten, C.I.A and Warm Communications. His work during this period moved across the broader drum and bass spectrum, incorporating influences from neurofunk, dancefloor, old-school rave, deep house and Detroit techno.

Alongside his work as Concord Dawn, Matt developed a career in artist management, initially working at Delete before establishing Southeast Management in 2017. He now heads the New Zealand office of Unified Artist Management, where he continues to work with artists including Shapeshifter and Fat Papi.

More than 25 years after the project first emerged from New Zealand’s underground scene, Concord Dawn remains an important part of the global drum and bass history.
